The method used was based on the number of students potentially eligible and the funding provided by the Federal Government for the student aid portion of the CARES Act. All students who met the basic criteria established by the Department of Education from the CARES Act legislation were emailed mailed an application for funding. An application was also included on the College’s CARES Act webpage where a student could submit if they did not receive or misplaced their College communication. All students who returned a completed application and certified on the application that they met the criteria on the application by the cut-off date were mailed a check for $1250. Approximately 33% of the remaining funding was distributed to all students who were eligible in the Spring that returned to campus in the Fall. Full time students received $250 and part time students received $135.
On May 6, UVA Wise placed the application and Federal Cares Act FAQs on our COVID-19 webpage, as well as emailed all eligible students. The application requires the students to document that they will use these funds for expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child care expenses and can provide documentation if needed.
