Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Jared Powell calls Newport News, VA his home, but being a military child, he had the opportunity to live all around the world. He is blessed with a beautiful family and honored to serve his country as an Army Officer. LTC Powell currently serves as the Professor of Military Science at East Tennessee State University and four extension units located in Tennessee and Virginia.
He was commissioned through the Army ROTC program with a degree in Business Administration. Upon commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery branch, Jared completed Fire Support and Gunnery training at Ft. Sill, OK. He was assigned as a Platoon Leader in 6th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment. Jared deployed to Iraq as a Platoon Leader in 2005-2006 supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his return from Iraq, Jared was assigned to 1st Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment.
As a Captain, he was a Battery Commander for 18 months in 1st Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment. Jared next served as a Targeting Officer at United States Army Europe. During his tenure, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2010-2011 supporting Operation Enduring Freedom as a Targeting Officer and Aidede-Camp to the ISAF IJC Deputy Commander of Operations. Jared next attended the Marine Corps Command and General Staff College in Quantico, VA where he earned a master's degree in military studies. He was then assigned as a Brigade Fire Support Officer in 1st Brigade, 15t Infantry Division. During his tenure in the 1st Infantry Division, his unit conducted a 9-month rotation to the Republic of Korea in support of the 2nd Infantry Division and 210 Field Artillery Brigade. Upon his return, Jared was assigned as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Florida State University. Next, he was assigned to the Ground Operations Command as the Fires Team Chief in the Republic of Korea. Upon his return from Korea, Jared then served as the Field Artillery Branch Chief at the Army Futures Command's Future Integration Directorate Powell has had the great privilege to serve in multiple leadership positions throughout his career and has deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Jared attributes his faith, family, mentors, and teammates to the success and protection he has had throughout his career. Jared is married to the former Jennifer Gray. Together they have two children, one son and one daughter.
