Our department is founded on a commitment to teaching excellence and continuous quality improvement. The Department of Business and Economics guides and mentors its students to build the knowledge and skills they will need to become the next generation of entrepreneurs and community leaders of economic prosperity.
Students who major in accounting, business administration, or economics will learn the foundational and intermediate principles of their major discipline and be prepared for related entry-level jobs in business or similar fields.
UVA Wise offers a degree program in which graduates will receive either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business Administration. The degree designation (BA or BS) awarded depends on the program of study students choose to pursue.

Faculty of the Department Business and Economics offer the courses listed on a regular basis. The Department offers certain required courses only in fall semesters or spring semesters. Other courses may be available less frequently, such as once every other year. Students are responsible for working with their departmental advisor and planning carefully to schedule required courses when they are offered. The Department does not offer independent study for regularly scheduled courses listed.
The Department of Business and Economics offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration with majors in accounting, business administration, and economics. The Department’s faculty teach courses in accounting, business computing, business education, business statistics, commercial law, economics, finance, marketing, strategy and management.
The Department’s Bachelor of Arts degree is well suited for pre-professional study in law or public administration. Both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees prepare students for careers or graduate school in economics, accounting, finance, marketing, management, business education, or entrepreneurship.
All majors in the department require satisfactory completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours, including:
- 53 hours of Liberal Arts Core requirements of the College
- 30 hours of core requirements of the Department
- 15 hours of required major-discipline courses
- 15 hours of restricted elective courses selected by students from a menu of upper-division courses in each major
- Sufficient unrestricted electives to reach a minimum total of 120 hours for the baccalaureate.
Bachelor of Arts
Candidates for the Bachelor of Arts degree must include 12 credit hours of courses in the humanities (English, history, foreign language, literature, philosophy, or visual and performing arts) at the 3000-level or higher as part of the minimum 120 hours required for the baccalaureate. Foreign language courses numbered 2010 and 2020 may also be counted to meet part of the 12-hour requirement.
The department offers minor in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, leadership studies, military science, and international business. All minors offered by the Department require at least 12 hours at the 3000-level or higher completed through UVA Wise. Students majoring in accounting, business administration, or economics may not count courses selected as restricted electives in their major program toward a minor offered by the Department. Students are required to meet with the Department Chair or their advisors to design an appropriate course of minor study. Departmental core requirements cannot be counted as part of the 18 hours requirement in a minor if you have a major in accounting, business or economics.
Advising
The Department of Business and Economics offers students individual advising. Professors personally know their advisees and help them at every level. Students who do not have an advisor must contact the department chair as soon as possible.
