UVA Wise, ETSU ROTC cadets to raise new flag at Flag Rock
Several ROTC cadets from UVA Wise and ETSU will raise a new United States flag on Norton’s Flag Rock on Friday to remember those who were killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
Captain Kyle Brenay said the cadets would gather at 6 a.m. in front of the Sugar Hill Cidery in downtown Norton to begin the hike to Flag Rock. He expects the trek to Flag Rock will take about an hour. Members of the Norton Fire Department and others will also participate in the event.
Brenay said two senior cadets would join him to raise the flag as the other cadets from both institutions observe from the overlook area. The event should conclude at 8 a.m.
The Virginia National Guard provided the flag that will replace the existing flag. Brenay said the ROTC cadets hope to make this an annual event as a way to bring the community together to remember those who fell on September 11.
