Today, UVA Wise welcomed new and returning students at Fall Convocation, an annual ceremony that kicks off the beginning of the new academic year.

At the event, UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry welcomed the class of 2028, highlighting that the Class of 2028 will be the most diverse class in the last decade.

“I encourage each of you to embrace your unique qualities,” said Henry. “This fall, embrace and try new things. Be kind, be engaged, be charitable and empathetic, but remember to take care of yourself. Make friends and enjoy your college experience.”

James E. Ryan, president of the University of Virginia, gave the class of 2028 thoughtful advice as they embark on their new journey. Ryan encouraged students to try new things and to not be afraid of failure.

Will Rudeseal, a senior from Taccoa, Georgia, took his oath of office to serve as president of the UVA Wise Student Government Association. Rudeseal then challenged students to attack the change presented in their lives and overcome it with excellence.

“I once heard a mentor say, ‘Be who you are and do it on purpose’ and that includes battling through change. No matter the changes that we face, it is how we respond to adversity that defines the legacy that we leave behind,” said Rudeseal. “For this year, I challenge you to attack change in all areas of your life. If there is something on campus that you want to see changed and there isn’t a door, build one. If there is a club you want to start, start it. Change only occurs if individuals look at the world around them and intentionally choose to make their environment a better place than when they found it.”

Cloey Bailey, a senior from Coeburn, Virginia, was then inducted as the 2024-2025 Honor Court Chair by Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Gary C. Johnson. Bailey then led the class of 2028 in reciting the Honor Code of the College.

Hannah Ryan, associate professor of music, who helped open the ceremony by leading the National Anthem, also led the singing of the College’s alma mater, “Dogwood and Rhododendron” alongside the Wise Guys, who also provided the processional and recessional music for the ceremony.

After the ceremony, new and returning students were encouraged to attend the Student Activities Fair, where campus clubs and organizations as well as community partners were present to showcase what the UVA Wise campus and regional community have to offer.
