Larry Greear Awarded William P. Kanto Award at the 41st Annual Forum on Education

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) recently hosted the 41st Annual Forum on Education at the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Larry Greear, Wise County Board Chairman, was awarded the William P. Kanto Award for 2025.
“Through his unwavering commitment to education and leadership, Larry Greear has left a meaningful legacy in Wise County schools, positively influencing generations of students, educators and the community,” says Mike Goforth, Superintendent for Wise County Public Schools.
“Even after his retirement from teaching, Larry remained committed to education and his community. For over 10 years, he has served on the Wise County School Board, continuing his dedication to improving the educational experience for students and supporting the schools he spent his career serving,” continues Goforth.
Greear served in the military and then moved into education, where he spent 36 years working with students and in administration. He began at Pound Elementary School, taught at Coeburn Middle and High School and became Principal of St. Paul Elementary School for several years. After his retirement, he began serving on the Wise County School Board.
“It has been a journey I have loved every single moment of. I’ll be here to help students until they tell me to leave,” Greear said after receiving his award.
The Forum on Education began in 1979 to honor educators and those who have contributed to the expansion of educational opportunities in the region. UVA Wise, Mountain Empire Community College, Norton City Schools and Wise County Public Schools gather annually to honor a local citizen who has contributed significantly to the field of education with the William P. Kanto award.
The William P. Kanto Memorial Award was established in 1987 and first awarded in 1989. Mr. Kanto played a vital role in the success of each of the four educational institutions in Wise County. He believed excellence in education was a primary solution to many economic and social problems of the regions.
“Allowing UVA Wise to host the Forum on Education and recognize someone who has poured their talents and time into the region is an honor. As a college, we support our local school systems and look forward to working alongside of them to help this region grow and be known for their teachers,” says Donna P. Henry, UVA Wise Chancellor.
